The North Carolina Aquariums offer many exciting opportunities for those interested in volunteer opportunities, internships, employment and current vacancies.

Year-Round Adult Volunteer Program

 

Year-Round Student Volunteer Program

 

Volunteers are always welcome at the Aquariums, where they are usually asked to make a minimum commitment of two to four hours a week. Orientation sessions and training are provided, and every effort is made to match up diverse skills with Aquarium needs throughout the year.

The North Carolina Aquariums offer a limited number of internships to students majoring in biology, ecology, education, design, and related fields. Internships available include:

  • North Carolina State Government/Youth Advocacy and Involvement Office (YAIO) Internships: Three internships, in animal husbandry, education, and exhibit design, are available at each Aquarium for in-state students and North Carolina residents each summer.   • Paid Summer Internships:

CAROLINA AQUARIUM ON ROANOKE ISLAND IN MANTEO, NC **

 

DESCRIPTION OF WORK:

The North Carolina Aquarium on Roanoke Island is seeking an Exhibits Curator to coordinate exhibits, educational displays, graphics, signs and related projects. The position supervises the Exhibits Department and is responsible for planning and managing new exhibit projects, developing and managing a department budget, coordinating workflow of the Exhibits Staff and maintaining existing exhibits, graphics, signs and displays throughout the Aquarium. The position requires strong organizational and communication skills, vision, knowledge of industry standards, and the ability to meet deadlines, keep projects within budget, and work effectively with other Aquarium staff members. Evening, weekend and holiday work may be required.

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES:

Experience in design and production of educational exhibits; experience with computer design and graphics; experience with construction methods; and good organizational and communication skills.

 

TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:

Graduation from a four-year college or university with a major in zoology, botany, or other natural science curriculum related to the area of work assigned and three years of curatorial and/or teaching experience in natural science, including some supervisory experience; or three years as a science teacher if filling an educational position; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

 

PREFERRED EXPERIENCE:

Two years of exhibit design and production experience at a museum, aquarium, or related facility and a four-year degree in commercial art, architecture or design.
